I don't know if I've ever told you that I was once a respiratory therapist. I cared for people in the ICU and the surgical ICU. I also cared for my father-in-law when he became ill many years ago. It's an interesting thing becoming the person that is cared for after years of caring for others. Ryan does a great job of caring for me and that's because we keep the lines of communication open at all times. Communication is the most important part of a care giving relationship. The second most important thing is that the care giver has outside resources like the Family Caregiving site at Sam's Club.
It's been a long time since I've updated you on my health. My health has taken a large downhill curve since the last time we talked. In addition to the colitis, my arthritis is wreaking havoc on my body, and remember that back surgery I had in 2014? I blew the disc above the previous fusion and I'm scheduled for another surgery in August. The pain is so bad that I have difficulty walking and that in turn means that I am walking a LOT slower. Guess what happens when you walk slow? You guessed it! You often have accidents before reaching the bathroom. Embarrassing? Yes. Is it the end of the world? Definitely not.
Did you know that 1 in 4 Americans (age 20 -85) experience some type of bladder control issues? It happens a lot. And people are STILL not talking about it because like me they feel some shame. Start talking about it and definitely talk to your doctor about it. In the mean time, do what I did and head on over to Sam's Club. Sam's Club has an excellent selection of bladder control products from Poise® and Depend®.
When Ryan and I go to Sam's Club our first stop is always the Health & Wellness area. The Health & Wellness area is a great place to start your shopping while waiting for your prescriptions to be processed. This is also the area where you will find both Poise® and Depend® Fit-Flex® Underwear for men and women. If you download the Digimarc Discovery app, you can scan anywhere on the packaging, and it will drive you to the Sam's Club Family Caregiving Web Site, and when you open your package you will find a sticker that you can redeem at the Sam's Club Pharmacy for a Sample kit for caregivers. Why did I choose Depend? I feel more secure than using pads and the Fit-Flex Underwear is more comfortable than a generic adult diaper.
Sam's Club also offers a Health and Wellness center in store for their members. Check your blood pressure and relax in the Power Recliner.
One of my favorite things about Sam's Club is how accessible they are for those who are disabled. They keep plenty of motorized carts on hand as well as a few wheel chairs. The aisles are wide enough to make turns and the employees are not only helpful but very friendly.
If you deal with chronic pain the way I do, use Sam's Club to build a kit to help alleviate the worst symptoms. Many of these items are available in the Sam's Club Health and Wellness Center.
I start with a heating pad. Heat is one of my greatest soothing agents. If you prefer cold you can add some reusable cold packs. I love pain cream with a menthol/camphor mix. I also keep acetominophen and ibuprofen. Use what works for you. If you have any other ideas to include in my kit, I would love to hear about them.
