This is the end of the leftover ham recipes! We started out with Orange & Honey Glazed Ham in the slowcooker. Then we had Creamy Ham and Potato Soup. Don't forget the delicious Loaded Baked Potatoes! I also made a Denver Omelet. Let me know if you are interested in that recipe and I'll post it. Now we are ending with Stovetop Ham and Broccoli Mac & Cheese. Not bad for a $9.00 ham! That's what I call getting the most bang from my food bucks!
You will not believe how easy Stovetop Ham and Broccoli Mac & Cheese is to make. It all starts with a Bechamel. I use gluten free flour but you can use regular all purpose flour. The outcome is the same.
What makes this Mac & Cheese different is the crispy bits of ham throughout. I saute the ham in a tiny bit of olive oil until it becomes brown and crispy. It is super delicious this way!
1 TSP Olive Oil
1 1/2 C Ham, Chopped
1- 12 Ounce Package Frozen Broccoli
1 - 12 Ounce Package Gluten Free Macaroni, Prepared according to Package Directions
2 TBSP Butter
2 TBSP Gluten Free Flour
2 C Warm Milk, (more if needed)
1 C Warm Heavy Cream
1 TSP Mustard Powder
1/2 TSP Ground Nutmeg
1 C Parmesan Cheese, Shredded
2 C Sharp Cheddar, Shredded
Salt& Pepper to taste
Preheat a medium frying pan over medium heat. Add the olive oil. Saute the ham until brown on all sides. Add the broccoli and cook until heated through. Remove from heat.
Cook gluten free macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
Melt butter in a 3 QT saucepan. Whisk in flour and let brown for 2 minutes.
Whisk in milk and let come to a simmer to thicken.
Whisk in cream, mustard powder and nutmeg.
Continue whisking and add in Parmesan and Cheddar. Whisk until melted.
Add salt and pepper to taste. If sauce is too thick, add a little milk to thin.
Stir in ham and broccoli.
Pour sauce over macaroni. Mix and serve.
