The Cost of Healthcare

My Healthcare Estimator

I injured my back 8 years ago. I had to move a car and it wasn't running so I had no choice but to push it. I had just a vague ache after I was done moving the car but the next morning I was in agony. It took me nearly an hour to inch myself out of bed. I went to the hospital and they diagnosed it as a severe sprain. After a month of pain meds and muscle relaxants I was still in pain but now my leg would suddenly go numb and I would just drop. It was time for an MRI.
The MRI indicated surgery and two weeks later I checked myself in. I was in the hospital for 3 days. The hospital bill alone was $120,000.00. The surgeon was another $25,000.00. I don't remember how much the rest of the bill was. All I can say is thank God I had insurance at the time. I don't know what I would have done without it.

United Healthcare has this cool tool on their site called myHealthcare Cost Estimator. I wish this had been available when I had my back surgery. myHealthcare Cost Estimator can give you an estimate of what your procedure will cost you with a certain provider. It gives you the opportunity to shop around for the best price. That's not all it does. It also give you information about your procedure. It's best to be an educated patient. You can find answers on the United Healthcare web site. You can set up a care path which is a treatment plan that works for you and your situation.
