Ryan's days off are always busy with errands. But we also like to take some time out to spend some time together doing a little baking and sharing it with friends.
When we first moved to South Dakota my then co-worker and now dear friend Bonnie gave me a recipe for a decadent cake called Better than Sex cake. I could not prepare something with that name for my very young children so I changed the name to Better than Saturday Morning Cartoon Cake. It was a hit with my kids and 17 years later is still my son's favorite cake. This is the easiest cake to make using boxed cake mix, sweetened condensed milk, Cool Whip and Heath Bars. When we ran to Walmart this week to purchase the ingredients I found a new product from Cool Whip called Cool Whip Frosting. It comes in three flavors, Vanilla, Cream Cheese and Chocolate. I am not going to tell you that I sat and ate the Cream Cheese flavor out of the carton with the spoon!
The first thing we are going to do is prepare a chocolate cake mix according to package directions. I picked up a gluten free Devil's Food mix at my local Walmart.
Once your cake is finished baking pull it out of the oven and immediately poke holes all over the cake. I used a serving fork to do this so I could have bigger holes!
Now that your cake is holey you are going to pour sweetened condensed milk all over it. This should be done while the cake is still hot so that the cake absorbs it.
When you have finished with the sweetened condensed milk you should let the cake cool and soak up all that goodness for at least an hour. When the cake has cooled you are going to cover it with Cool Whip Frosting. I chose Vanilla, but Cream Cheese or even Chocolate would be delicious as well!
To finish the cake we are going to sprinkle crushed Heath Bars all over the top!
Make sure you taste the cake once or twice before giving anyone else a piece. You want to ensure perfection before sharing!
Make sure you share your cake with some friends. This is the best way to insure that it doesn't hang around too long (or eat too much!).
It's important to remember to celebrate the little things; spending time with those you love, friendship, a day off from work, a beautiful fall day... You get the picture!
