I am one of millions! I am a champion for kids! You can be too! Champions for Kids mission is to mobilize millions of people to improve the lives of children in their communities. Each month there is a new Simple Service Project that you can help with. It doesn't take a lot of time or money. Just a little commitment.
This month's Simple Service Project is the Nickelodeon Big Help Book Drive. Gather your friends and your family to donate new and gently used books to children in your community. You can find more information below.
I called my local United Way office to find out which organizations would most benefit from a donation of children's books. They suggested my local Youth & Family Services office. I spoke with Amber and she was thrilled with the idea! Next, I set up an event on Facebook and invited all of my local friends to join up with me to help with the donation.
Next, Ryan and I headed to Walmart to do a little shopping to kick off our book drive.
I could not believe how inexpensive children's books are! So we got a bunch!
So many of us take access to books for granted. I grew up in a house full of books and so did my children. I give books as gifts for baby showers and birthdays. Curling up with a good book is my favorite thing to do. I was shocked by these statistics:
- 61% of low income families have no books for their children.
- 80% of the preschool and after school programs serving at risk children have no books at all.
Join me and become a champion for the kids of your community. Ask your friends to buy a book the next time they are out shopping. Find an organization close to you to donate the books to. Help a child read!
