If you have read or watched the news in the past few days then you know there is a terrible fire burning out of control in Colorado. People have lost their homes and there has been on death. Fire is a greedy monster and the heat combined with the winds and lack of moisture that we have been experiencing in this part of the country have made the entire area a time bomb that has blown.
12 years ago there was a horrible fire in South Dakota called the Jasper Fire. It burned over 83,000 acres. My friend Jackie's parent's house was 1/4 mile from the fire line. She called me in the middle of the night and we headed to Custer to start packing up Kathleen and Jim's house. They were out of town. We packed up important papers and photos first and filled their car to bring back to Jackie's house. Then we got to packing up the rest of the house. We packed almost the entire house in one night and placed it all in the garage. The Sheriff told us he would give us 45 minutes notice when it was time to evacuate. I took a week off of work and spent most of that time in Custer. It was a horrible time.
The photos above are of our most recent fire. It's called the Highlands Fire. It's burning not too far from more friends. This is just one of many fires that are currently burning in South Dakota. It's a scary time right now. I got up this morning and the smoke was so thick in the air that it is hard to breathe. I really hope the weather breaks soon.
